A Safer World For The Truth marks World Press Freedom Day 2021
Amsterdam, 30 April 2021 – The team behind the A Safer World For The Truth Project is commemorating World Press Freedom Day 2021 by highlighting the ongoing impunity for the killers of journalists.
A Safer World For The Truth is a collaborative project between Free Press Unlimited (FPU), Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) and Reporters Without Borders (RSF) to pursue justice for murdered journalists.
Finding the truth is the world’s most dangerous job. Every five days a journalist is killed because of their work. Killing the truth is the world’s safest crime and in nine out of ten cases the killers go free.
Journalists all around the world are harassed, arrested, kidnapped and murdered for doing their job. Fuelled by a lack of political will and poor institutional capacity – this deadly trend has held steady for the past ten years. This must end.
For David, Roberto, Jamal, Borhan and Lokman who have died so far this year alone.
For the 1394 journalists murdered since 1992.
For doing their job.
For finding the truth.
Since those in power lack the will or the means to thoroughly investigate, we are stepping in. To investigate. To document. To pursue justice.
To create a safer world for the truth.
